Saul Magazine

SAUL MAGAZINE

I am proud to announce a project that I have dreamed about for a very long time.

It has kept me busy for the past few months, Saul Magazine. It all started in my publication design class at Palm Beach State College, Lake Worth, because I had a belief in the skills of my students. My pupils were asked to interview people or answer a list of Q&A questions provided, create layouts and artwork to inform and the rest, as they say, is history.

You can order hard copies online, or simply read it.
Either way, I hope you enjoy the first  issue of Saul.

If you would like to buy a hard copy you can do so at my Blurb storefront. Follow the links above.

Artist Proposals: Palm Beach State Art Gallery: Lake Worth

If you're an artist and make really nice work then I want to hear from you. As you may know I am a  Professor at Palm Beach State College. Recently I was asked to take over the art gallery on our Lake Worth Campus. I am so excited to help develop the arts in South Florida. So excited! And if you're an artist in South Florida and you would the opportunity to exhibit your work in a gallery please contact me (at work). And yes I work in a really cool building. So great telling people "look for the building with the big purple triangle".

And if you're saying "awww, I don't live in South Florida" don't despair! If you think you'd be able to ship work, safely and easily. That's cool too. But I do know local can be easier setting up. We artists have to look out for one another.

Exhibition Opportunity: South Florida Artists
The Gallery at Lake Worth, Palm Beach State is accepting artist submissions to exhibit in the gallery. Solo and group exhibitions. Email digital submissions to Victoria Martin: MartinV@palmbeachstate.edu. Please include Art Gallery or Artist Submission in the subject line.
Or snail-mail: Victoria Martin
4200 Congress Ave., MS# 15,  Lake Worth, FL 33461.

Happy New Year

It's almost 2016 and this week I have felt like painting. The joy of drawing, and thin washes of bright color and animals. So here are all of the above. How I enjoy seeing the pencil lines, the artist's hand. The thought and process visible on the surface. Might put these on the Etsy shop. Definitely in Artisans on the Ave in Lake Worth (Betty's Gallery).

Online Museum Visit

A former student sent me this article found at The Slate.
It seems while Cooper -Hewitt the Smithsonian's Design museum based in NYC is closed they've moved their collection online, definitely worth a visit. The fun part, you can browse their art collection by color. Check it out.

Sketchy Business

I just sent off a series of sketches and mock ups for a commissioned piece. It's going to be life sized and a double. The picture accompanying this entry is fresh out of my sketchbook. Have I ever mentioned how much I love working in my sketchbook? Because I do. When I lack inspiration one of the first things I do is reach for a sketchbook and flip through the pages.

There was an art dealer a in my studio a few weeks back and he asked about influences. I picked up my sketchbook off the table and said something to the effect of "anything I see that inspires me I document" and I opened the sketchbook to show him sketches for the work adorning the walls and he replied "one day that's going to be worth a lot of money". That was so cool to hear.

So, if you're an artist work in your sketchbook. Draw what you see, draw what you love and when you aren't sure what to make or if you have an artistic block you'll have inspiration at your finger tips.

Opening Reception JF Gallery, West Palm Beach

If you are in South Florida this Saturday I hope you can make it to JF Gallery for the "Pictures of Nothing Exhibit". The opening reception is March 17, 2012 from 6 - 9 pm. Here's a link to their facebook page and a link to the gallery website.

One of the pieces  in the show is No Thing and the other is a double figure called Na Da. (get the tie in for the show?) I know... I am a total dork. Looking at the picture I adore the figure with Na on its chest, the pot belly is too much and sadly it reminds me of... me! Bwah! Hope you're there, because I am worried since it's St. Patrick's Day and most people I know are going to be out swilling beer (as they should be).

Talented Students

I just had to post this image. Today I received a BEAUTIFUL gift from a student (and new friend). It is the black and white pendant shown in the top row of the gallery of images. The pendant was made by a very talented artist and designer Shana Zingman of Zing Thing Studios.

If you are interested in beautiful glass jewelry or graphic design visit Shana's website.

Palm Beach State- January 12

On January 12 there are big changes at PBCC. That is the day we become Palm Beach State College. The College began offering its first Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Supervision and Management in fall 2009. It is seeking state approval to offer additional bachelor's degrees, including a Bachelor of Science in nursing and B.A.S. in information management technology. Rumor mill has it that a BFA may soon be on its way!
