Angel of Love Tutorial

Please stop by your local bookstore and ask for the most recent copy of Art Doll Quarterly because I have written a tutorial on sculpting a figure. You may notice on the cover it says Sculpting an Angel of Love by Victoria Rose Martin. It's actually the little angel figure you see accompanying this blog. I put her over in the gallery in Lake Worth and she sold, I keep meaning to give a shout out to Joyce at Clay Glass Metal Stone, to let her know if the persons who bought the angel buys the magazine they can watch step by step this figure being made. There are TONS of photos accompanying the tutorial. (FYI: I shoot my work with a Sony NEX-5)

Tooo Big

I loaded a kiln late last night and fired it today but why you ask is my bottom lip is all pouty and quivering? Because one of my girls was too big for the kiln. (big sigh... she's 23.5 inches tall) I get so darned impatient to see them fired. Maybe that is why the universe guided me to clay in the first place because it is really about patience. If clay is too wet it falls, and you patiently have to wait for it to dry. And then you have to wait for the work to dry before putting it into a kiln. Then if you heat a kiln too fast the work blows up, so you have to take it slow. When the kiln reaches temperature and begins cooling I pace like a father in the delivery room. Sticking paper in the peeps to see if it catches on fire, blowing fans towards the kiln and an ever vigilant ear listening for pinging and popping meaning it's cooling too fast and in danger of breaking. Oh... patience. So once this gal dries I can bring her to the Craft Gallery and have Betty, my clay angel fire my baby. I'll post a picture of her when she's done.

Nada, Nothing

It's been a busy few weeks getting work together for shows near and far. It's a good feeling having the work ready when deadlines are just over the horizon. I submitted this piece for a show at JF Gallery here in the West Palm Beach area called Pictures of Nothing... hence the words on the chest. This spicy little gal is NO THING; she's a hot tamale. I am really having fun with the little circus inspired outfits on my pieces lately. Hope you like her.

Great Opening Night at Greg Mangum

I am happy to report that last night was amazing at Greg Mangum Gallery. A great turn out and a lot of red dots (if you're in the biz you know when a piece sells it gets a red dot sticker). It was really great having the opportunity to speak with old friends and collectors who I am sure will become new friends. I also want to tell my friend Victoria that when I left at 10 pm the sculpture 3 Legged Race was still without a red dot... keep your fingers crossed!

I shot these pictures when there was a lull in the crowd. And if you haven't attended an Island City Art walk in Wilton Manners I highly recommend it. It was a great vibe with throngs of people popping in and out of galleries, shops and boutiques that were hosting events. I was really impressed.

And a big thanks to Greg and Ken for all they have done to promote my art. Be sure to stop by the gallery, the show will be up for a few weeks. By the way Greg and Ken are both really talented artists. They'll be in Key West next weekend for an art show. One day I hope to get my hands on one of Greg's bird paintings. (I love the big colorful crow painting). And speaking of arts hows, I am on my way to Art Palm Beach; inspiration here I come!

Island City Art Walk: tomorrow night

Opening at Greg Mangum Gallery

This Friday (January 20) I am having an opening reception at Greg Mangum Gallery in Wilton Manners, FL (Fort Lauderdale). They are located at 2301 Wilton Drive and if you are in the neighborhood I hope you can stop by.

I got up at 6 am today and glazed my rump off trying to get the last pieces finished. Seriously... I finally finished glazing about an hour ago (10 pm) because I have to get the show set up on Wednesday after school and my babies... time aint on my side. In the kiln I've got 3 wall figures (2 doubles and one single) and 4 sets of salt and pepper shakers. The piece accompanying this post is called 3 legged race. No doubt she will find her way to the gallery. I really like this piece. It reminds me of those balmy days in June just before summer vacation back when I was a kid. So if you find yourself wandering aimlessly on Friday night please stop by the gallery.

Pour Some Sugar... I Mean Salt on Me

These are a new set of salt and pepper shakers. They're fun to make. I have 4 sets in my studio at various stages of wet and dry. Next week gallery walk in Wilton Manners where my work will be featured at Greg Mangum Gallery. Most likely I will be pulling these off Etsy (unless they sell) and bringing them down to the gallery. They're small only about 6 inches high, but I suppose that's big as far as salt and pepper shakers go.

I am enjoying making these but I've been invited to take part in a teapot show at Morgan Contemporary Glass Gallery in Pittsburgh, PA and I really need to start working on that. Luckily there are a few ideas swimming around in the old noggin. Honestly, when I work I usually grab a lump of clay with no thought and just see what happens. Knowing me I will make 2 and pick the better of the two for the show. Actually that reminds me the Mad Hatter Exhibition at the Armory in West Palm is fast approaching and I need to make something for that.

If only I didn't feel so lazy tonight I would get started. Fiddle Dee Dee, there's always tomorrow.

My Dear Deer

Here is a piece just put onto Etsy. It's called My Dear. I crack up when I see the little expression on the deer's face. The girl is in her panties, wearing black knee high socks and rocking out with her pal. If the sculpture doesn't at least make you smile...

The wall sculpture is approximately 14 inches high and hand sculpted from low fire earthenware clay.

Another Etsy

Another day and another phone call with my sister and after our conversation lots of ideas to explore in clay. (Watch for lots of animal companions). In the meantime thought I would share another piece that is available in my Etsy shop. This wall sculpture is called Think Think. He measures about 16 inches high and has a handy little hole in his back so he can easily be hung on a nail or screw.

You might notice if you zoom in that this wee little lad is anatomically correct. His tidy whities aren't hiding anything. I realized I was sculpting so many female forms and I was neglecting the boys. I am enjoying cutting in their six packs and even their "niblets". I hope you enjoy the work and be sure to cruise on over to Etsy if not to see my work browse what they have to offer. So much beautiful hand made work. And you are putting money into the pocket of a real live person and not a huge corporation.

New Pieces on Etsy

My sister Kelly phoned me today and said "I went to your blog and you haven't written anything in ages, why not?" So in honor of Kelly I am posting an image of a new sculpture which I have for sale on Etsy. This wall sculpture measures approximately 17 inches high is actually inspired by childhood memories of Kelly and me.

The joined bodies represent the closeness siblings share. The white wing represents the protection of an unseen guardian angel. It can also represent how regardless of the squabbles you may have you are joined to family and hold an unseen bond. The panties they wear are similar to the horrible rubber pants we wore over our cloth diapers. (I know... TMA)

In nutshell, if you have family that you love tell them so. Kelly, I love you and thanks for poking to write this. Hey... that sounds like a great concept for another piece.

Then and Now

This little lady popped out of the kiln today. Funny enough while I was sculpting it I had thought of the best title... do you think I can remember it now? So, I am calling her Then and Now. The sculpture stands about 36" high and she is seated in an old Amaco doll high chair.

I remember being a kid and going to friend's or cousin's houses and seeing toys like that chair and DROOLING. Now here I am in my 40's and I am still drooling over funky old doll chairs. It's nice to see nothing has changed.

Anyhow, I have to deliver her to Tequesta tomorrow after class for an exhibition at the Lighthouse Center for the Arts. The show opens September 15th. If you are in the area I hope you can make it to the opening reception.

How are you inspired?

Inspiration can be readily found, safely tucked away in fine museums all around the world. Like this fine terra cotta figure I discovered while wandering the nooks and crannies of the British Museum, or even the small painted wooden figure I admired at the V & A. I thought the security guards were going to escort me out the door because I was spending so much time staring, photographing and sketching the treasures. One guard even came up to the case where I was drooling over one piece, grabbed the corner of it and gave it a firm shake as if testing the strength and then walked away.

I thought to myself "what's up with that?" You mean not everyone takes 342 photos of one terra cotta form? Okay, maybe I was a bit art crazed but when you see something that inspires you take a picture, make a sketch and take it back to the studio and see how it can influence your art.

But if you can't make it to a museum, remember to look at the ordinary. Perhaps it's moss growing on a wall or the way sunlight falls on an object. See the beauty around you. But beware, somebody might call security. Happy Saturday.

Creative Spark and Amsterdam

You'll find a nice interview on Create Mixed Media. There are photos of my studio and some interiors of my house. And yes, my dining room really is purple and turquoise. One of the questions asked of me was "if I could spend one day making art with someone who would it be?". I said Vincent Van Gogh.

We spent last week in Amsterdam and I got to visit the Vincent Van Gogh museum. Seeing so much of his work was very inspirational. Aside from drooling over Van Gogh's work, one of the thing I will remember the most about Amsterdam was the number of bicycles in the city. Holy crap crossing the street was seriously taking one's life in their own hands. Back in the states we have multi level parking garages for cars, in Amsterdam they are PACKED with bikes. The photo attached here is just a tiny detail of a garage.

There were bikes under canal bridges, bike racks where they had them stacked three high. Aside from bikes there are some nice museums in Amsterdam including the Rijk Museum (Rembrandt's night watch was the highlight) and the Hermitage.

Thatched Cottage- A Lovely Sight

Happy Fourth of July!! (my favorite holiday)

Here is an image of a thatched cottage located at Kilmore Quay (Quay is pronounced Key) in Ireland. It's nice to see the cottages with the thatched roofs, it really gives you a feel of being somewhere else. From what I hear the Irish government provides grants to people who replace their modern roofs for thatched. They're beautiful, one can't help but stop admire them.

Ireland hasn't let us down, the weather as they say has all 4 seasons in one day. Today was lovely, about 70 degrees which has been the warmest day so far. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

SoFlo Ceramics Show at the Armory Art Center

Just got home from delivering artwork to the Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach and noticed one of my pieces on the postcard for the SoFlo Ceramic Show. Opening Reception July 22 6-8pm. Very cool indeed. The images accompanying this entry are the pieces I brought to the Armory for the show. They are approximately 13" x 8 x 7". I am having a lot of fun exploring the idea of the bed in my pieces lately. The bed plays such a large part in our lives. I remember as a kid getting sent to dad's house with my sisters and the three of us having to share a single bed. We'd pile onto the mattress utilizing every square inch. Also, the fact that I deal with migraines and these hateful headaches dictate that I am confined to a darkened room in bed several days out of a month. So for now I am exploring figures in bed and I really hope you can make it to the Armory to check out the show, remember they also have fantastic classes and studio space.

I've just been notified that the piece accompanying this entry was accepted for the Visions in Clay exhibition at LH Horton Jr Gallery, Stockton, California.

The juror for the show is Judith S. Schwartz, Ph.D., and she has identified an international movement of artists who use clay confrontationally in the book, Confrontational Ceramics. If you visit the web site you can sneak a peek inside the book. My copy is on its way.

I Painted My Studio

Well I've done it again. I painted my studio yet again. I think this makes it 5 times in just over 2 years! Ha! But hey it's my sanctuary, it's my studio. A place that reflects the inner me (painted 5 times in 2 years... I think that makes the inner me a total wack-a-doodle).

Anyhow, here is a shot I took yesterday afternoon when I got in from work. I ran to the studio (to appreciate the new paint) and opened the blinds and the sun was just dazzling on the freshly painted coral colored walls (Valspar: Wet Coral is the actual color). And my little sculpture looked so dramatic with the light falling on it. The piece is unfinished. She is green (unfired) and I haven't titled her yet. While building her I kept thinking of the princess and the pea.I must google it because I can't remember anything other than the girl slept on a stack of mattresses and felt a tiny pea underneath it all.(or at least that sounds right).

If you get stuck for ideas, reflect your favorite childhood stories and illustrate them in whatever way you can. I'll post more images when the work is fired.

Exhibiting Member Piedmont Craftsmen

I received notification that my work has been juried into Piedmont Craftsmen located in Winston Salem, NC. Needless to say I am very excited as I have long admired the organization.

Since 1963, Winston-Salem, North Carolina has been home to Piedmont Craftsmen, Inc., a guild founded by craft artists and collectors to honor the work of the hand. I will be taking part in the Piedmont Craftsmen's 48th Fair November 18-20. There is an option to have a booth or submit 5 pieces for a group booth. Given my busy schedule I will most likely opt for the 5 pieces rather than a solo booth.November is a long time off and you can be assured as the time draws nearer I will keep you posted on the how, what and wheres.

The image I posted with this entry is called Besties. I am back to making my boxes with drawers. The little faces remind me of childhood, particularly my sister Kelly and I. (see the picture on my web site) We were besties.

My Studio Shelf

Somebody recently posed the question, "do you wear anything special, lucky or magical while making art?" You know you hear stories about baseball players who wear special underwear or socks during important games. And it got me thinking for all of my 'out there woo woo' thoughts I don't do anything like that. There is no special apron or lucky charm. I do have a paring knife that I use 90% of the time and it's been my primary sculpting tool for almost 20 years but I think I could hit a grocery store and find another one if I had to.

I do know that I like a clean studio before I start to work. It's like I can't focus without everything in order.

The question did make me realize that I like surrounding myself with things that I find visually appealing. Here is an image the work table in my studio and a more detailed view of my shelf. There is a small portrait I painted of Jody, a small silver shrine I bought at the Tate Britain, a bird's nest my sister Virginia sent me. Just bits and pieces that make me think.

So is there anything you do when you prepare to work in your studio? Or are you like me and just do a happy dance because you get to make things?

Florida Craftsmen Opening

It's been a week since the opening at Florida Craftsmen Gallery and NCECA. It was a great time and a fantastic turnout at the gallery. Here are a couple of shots of the piece titled "Hornet's Nest". She's sitting pretty in the window.

She's approximately 40 inches high. About the size of a 2 or 3 year old.

The Nerd Herd

Here is a sample of one of the new cups I have been making. I brought 10 of them to Florida Craftsmen Gallery in St. Petersburg.

As they were all lined up on the counter I just kept thinking they look like a herd of nerds. Or like a high school reunion. The good, the bad and the ugly. (and the dorky)
I think I am going to start doing portraits of people I know... that is until they catch on and kick my *ss.

They're fun to make, what can I say.

I delivered a bunch of art work for the Hot and Humid exhibition today at Florida Craftsmen Gallery. As we were walking to the car I looked up and saw my artwork on a banner. It was nice.

The Hot and Humid exhibit coincides with NCECA.

More Prague

This image was taken last night at Prague Castle. The spires of the cathedral looked so lovely from our hotel room so we just had to take a late night walk to get a closer look. Prague is quite picturesque.

One downer is we have discovered that a lot of the local restaurants prey on tourists. For example, they will bring a basket of bread to your table and even if you don't touch it or order it, you are charged for it. The same applies with almonds, pretzels so if they bring a serving of both you are charged for both. Some places even apply a cover charge without announcing. My advice is to beware, ask before you are seated, and check your bill.

Prague, Czech Republic

Day three in Prague, CZ. These images are day and night views of the city near Prague Castle. The city is situated on the Vltava River in the center of Bohemia and has served as the political, cultural and economic center of the Czech state for more than 1,100 years. Pretty amazing considering the USA only celebrated our 234th birthday on the 4th of July.
The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. During WWII the city suffered only a few bombings therefore most of the architecture is as it was hundreds of years ago.

British Museum

If you haven't guessed by now, I am totally addicted to the British Museum. We've been in London a week and I have already been three times and I may go again later today.

Here is a piece found the other day while wandering the museum. It is a decorative shield from Flanders and it is believed it may have been a prize a knight received for competing in a tournament. It is made from wood is dated approximately 1475-1500.

Tomorrow we head off to Prague. Yesterday we got up and said "what about a side trip?"Today do yourself a favor, instead of asking WHY ask yourself WHY NOT?

Bob's Boat

I thought I would put a photo up of something that was dear to my brother Bob. When we were here two years ago I had sent him a photo of this boat and he affectionately called it "his boat". He told me that he let the people here in Ireland think it was theirs.

As we drove up the road and I saw the little blue boat come into view it made me quite sad. So in memory of my dear brother Bob I am posting a photo of "his boat".

My Favorite Places

This is absolutely one of my favorite places on the planet. Affectionately known as "my bridge". Give me a sunny day, a stroll by the Thames, maybe stop off for a pint late in the afternoon, more walking and great conversation.

While in London Jody and I wear pedometers and on average we walk 5 miles per day. You just don't get that here in Florida because we are so reliant on automobiles. That is one of the things I miss the most when we get home.

The Rumbling Volcano

A volcano... really? Has my life really become a soap opera? My work will be part of an exhibition at SDC Gallery in London beginning on May 5 "God willing and the creeks don't rise" or should I say "God willing and the volcano stops spewing".

This piece is called Grow and it is approximately 13 inches high, ceramic with underglazes, oxides and stains. So if you are in London from May 5- August 7, 2010 stop by the gallery and see some of my work.

Mom

It's been a rough week because my mother died last Sunday. My brother Bob and I drove up to Gainesville Sunday morning and got to be with her as she died.

This photo was taken last fall at my birthday party and shows Bob, mom, and me. I have kept photos like this very close at hand this week to help remember the good times. Live while you are alive and do whatever you can to be happy. I love you mom.

Show at SDC Opens May 4th

The kiln has been firing and my hands have been sculpting pretty much non stop for the past few months. I have been working on my body of work to bring over to SDC Gallery in London, England where I will be taking part in the Summer Collection.

SDC is located in the East End of London (24 Rivington Street) and is an absolutely lovely space. The Summer Collection opens on May 4th and ends August 7, 2010. Hopefully those of you on the other side of the pond will come opening night. Address and directions can be found on the galleries direction page.

The sculpture accompanying this entry will be in the show. It is handbuilt ceramics, slips, oxides, underglazes and overglazes. (c. 4" x 3" x 2").

Mad Hatter's Tea Party

The Mad Hatter's Tea Party is a fundraiser for the Armory Art Center Artist-in-Residence programs in ceramics, sculpture, jewelry and painting.

I have 3 pieces in the show, one shown here titled "Off With Her Head" that will be auctioned tomorrow. The Armory asks that you bring your "wild and wacky hat" and "bid on their silent auction of hand-made contemporary teapots created by local and national artists". Awarded "The Best Luncheon in Palm Beach" by The Palm Beach Post's Tom Smith.

Rabbits

Here is a new standing piece called Give. She is approximately 5 inches in height and is mixed media (metal, clay and wood). Rabbits are multiplying in my studio. I just love sculpting their ears.

While I am out running I quite often stumble upon small brown rabbits that hop into my path. I don't know who gets more startled, me or them. This little rabbit has the word Give upon her chest. A gentle reminder to always give more than you take and to keep your basket wide open for the universe to fill.

Glazed Buffalo Girl

The kiln is unloaded and thank God all is well. A few weeks back I posted three little buffalo gals, here is one all glazed and finished.

She is small scale and the figure measures approximately 5 inches from horn to tail. The base is approximately 4 inches. What I like about these little guys is we all have quiet little spaces in our homes just right for a small piece of art. Remember my Etsy shop is now opened for business, watch for new listings regularly.

I am totally inspired, I went to Art Palm Beach today and my mind is racing with new ideas. Back to my sketchbook.

Palm Beach State- January 12

On January 12 there are big changes at PBCC. That is the day we become Palm Beach State College. The College began offering its first Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Supervision and Management in fall 2009. It is seeking state approval to offer additional bachelor's degrees, including a Bachelor of Science in nursing and B.A.S. in information management technology. Rumor mill has it that a BFA may soon be on its way!

New Year, New Work

I just took this picture of my studio table. I just changed the paper and turned the Roomba loose so the place is presentable again. That is until I start yanking out bottles of glaze.

I decided to try a terra cotta body for a change. The work is for the Mad Hatter Tea Pot show to be held in March at the Armory Art Center. Each piece has an Alice in Wonderland vibe. The large piece is Alice's head with a flamingo and the two smaller pieces are Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb in top hat tea cups.

A New Schtick

Something really nice happened the other day, I was in a shop and as I was paying my bill the clerk said "Aren't you the artist who makes those little bird people?"It was quite surprising and I asked her how she knew and she said "I've seen your work in galleries and I really like it". I must say it was pretty cool.

Also very cool, here is one of my newest babies fresh out of the kiln. This series is small scale (5 inches). This piece is called Love On My Mind.

I am sculpting and getting ready for my show this summer in London, England. I will update you when I have more information and know which pieces I am bringing over. It is all so exciting.

Show at the Craft Gallery

Two weeks ago there were 4 openings that featured my work. This weekend there is one at the Craft Gallery in Lake Worth, Florida. Other artists participating in the show are Debra Fritts and Nancy Kubale Wicker. They are very talented artists and I really admire their work.
In need of more artwork to show I have been sculpting like a mad woman. As you can see from the photo it is a life size head, that will just barely fit into my little kiln (Chrissy). The piece is completely handbuilt. I kept a small mirror on the table while working and it is funny to see slight resemblances to my own face in the clay form. The piece stands 18 inches high and is green (unfired) in the photo accompanying this entry.

And They're Out

I just unloaded and even had time to photograph the work, which is a very good thing since I have to deliver the work to the gallery tomorrow morning. This photo shows the box with the drawer opened and you can see the lovely chartreuse color against the rich blue.

One in the Oven

I finished glazing last night and since there was no school today in honor of Veteran's Day, I am happy to say the kiln is firing. As I type, the color inside the kiln is bright orange and I am waiting eagerly to hear the familiar sound of the kiln sitter tripping (which signals the end of the firing). I will be able to peak in before leaving for work in the morning.

This photo was taken just before I closed the lid of the kiln. I enjoy how the one piece looks like it is peaking out of the peep hole.

On the Table

I have been getting ready for the faculty show at PBCC Lake Worth. One of the pieces I plan on showing accompanies this blog entry and is called Enquire Inspire (see wording stamped on surface).

The work is green (unfired) and unglazed in the photo, which is why it looks gray. What I find comical is notice how the figure on the left looks like he is holding the paint brush (don't I wish they would glaze themselves). The show opens in 10 days so I had better get glazing. Hoping to fire the work Wednesday (Veteran's Day). You can be sure I will post an image when the work comes safely out of Chrissy (my kiln, yes I named my kiln).

I have just signed up for an Esty account. If you are not familiar with Esty.com it is an online venue where artists and craftsmen can sell their hand made work. I am still in the process of building my shop. I have just unloaded a kiln and getting ready to put some little Vixie Chix up there.

New Web Site Layout

Today my newly redesigned website was uploaded. I had been adding to the old website for quite awhile and I felt it was getting cluttered. It's been streamlined and hopefully easier to navigate.

Most of the artwork shown on the site has already sold, which is a very good thing. The piece that accompanies this entry is a new wall hanging. I am continually creating more. In fact, I am getting ready to load a bisque kiln tomorrow. I have 5 pieces in that kiln that are going to be high fired in a wood kiln. I can wait to see the results. Delivered Work

This past weekend was a busy one. First, I celebrated my birthday on Labor Day (how appropriate, since birthdays are labor days for our moms).

Then I delivered a car load of new artwork to Florida Craftsmen Gallery. This piece is called Beach Baby. The heart on her tummy is a drawer so you can stash jewelry or other mementos inside her.

I also had an opening last Friday night at Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery in Lake Worth, Florida. The turn out was great. I saw a lot of students from PBCC. To all who made it a successful night, thank you.

Lovely Last Week of Fun

This photo is of the Dicken's Inn a beautiful pub and hotel located in St. Katherine's Lock which is just a stones throw from Tower Bridge in London.
The flowers were absolutely lovely and sitting on the porch one could catch a glimpse of Tower Bridge. Honestly, not a bad way to spend an afternoon.

We arrived home last night and with a sad heart I say that vacation has ended. Back to life, back to reality...

The Leaving of Liverpool

Just back from a trip to Liverpool, England and my mind is swimming with Beatles songs. Nearly every shop you enter is playing The Beatles music. The Albert Dock is where you will find a good portion of Beatles shops such as the Fab Four and the Beatles Story. It is also the location of the Tate Liverpool,(which in my opinion blew the doors off both Tate's in London). We then wandered our way down to the Cavern Quarter and onto Matthew Street. This photo is actually Jody and I in the Cavern Club. Actually, this is two separate images of Jody and I and through the magic of photoshop, we are one.

River Thames

This is a shot taken of the River Thames in Richmond (London). We took a nice long leisurely walk along the river and watched the Canadian geese and Swans paddling around.

I can't iamgine ever growing tired of the architecture in London. There is so much to see aside from the usual Big Ben and St. Pauls. Small historic buildings dot the banks of the river. We went into a pub the other day on the river called the White Cross (very near the spot where this photo was taken). Seemingly it was built on an old Roman road and the building has been there before they began keeping records. It was a frequent watering hole for William the Orange. So much history to digest and so little time.

The White Cliffs

Yesterday we went down to the coast, had dinner with family, and were given a tour of the surrounding white cliffs.

They truly are an amazing sight to see. The bright white chalk contrast strongly against the water, grass and sky. It almost looks as if someone took a big white cake place it on a cobalt blue platter and randomly sliced into it.

Close to the edge the earth is crumbling away from erosion. Those areas actually sink down lower than the rest, almost like an old grave. I kept thinking tread carefully, that would be a new grave if the land gave way. Trust me, it's a long way to the bottom.

George and Pilgrim 2

Just wanted to put up another shot taken inside the lounge at the George and Pilgrim. This is looking out the front windows as daylight was slowly fading.

The size of the stones and how they've been smoothed and glisten like glass from countless human hands touching them over the past 5 centuries. The old leaded windows framed out with stained glass. We just don't have this sort of history back in the states. Since 1452 people have looked out these windows.

If you can't tell I really enjoyed the atmosphere during our stay at the George and Pilgrim.

George and Pilgrim Hotel

I had to post a picture of the hotel we stayed in while in Glastonbury, England. It is called the George and Pilgrim It was built circa 1452 and is located right in the town center. As you walk into the hotel there is the most fabulous lounge area. The ceilings are covered in thick dark beams and the floors creek and moan under the weight of your feet.
Speaking of floors, the floor in our room was so old and crooked that the bed actually was on a slope. I loved every crooked, creaking minute of our stay. So, if you are in Glastonbury, I highly recommend the George and Pilgrim if for nothing more than the aesthetics and the amazing history of the building.

The Rain in Spain

There actually is no rain in southern Spain, which is why it is so lovely and brown. We started out there but with 40 degrees (that is about 104 to my fellow Americans) and no a/c we high tailed it out of there. While we were there we mainly hid out from the sun. Here is where I spent a lot of my time, the balcony. I did a lot of painting. And reading. I read Eat, Love Pray by Elizabeth Gilbert. A very sweet book about traveling and finding oneself.
We are in England where it is much cooler (in more ways than one). Yesterday I spent the entire day in central London painting the architecture. Tower Bridge, The Tower of London, and of course Big Ben. Who knows what adventures today will bring.

A Week of Painting

Very long time no see. Since my last posting we've bought a house and moved, became the Chair of the Art Department, and joined a new co-op gallery called Clay Glass Metal Stone. No stress.(please note the sarcasm). Anyhow, the last of the boxes are opening and shelves in the studio are being reassembled. My summer teaching is nearing the end, so overall life is pretty darn good.
This was a busy week of painting. Yesterday morning I did touch ups at Rooney's pub, this morning I touched up Slainte's, then looked at a space for a new Mexican Restaurant where I may be painting, and this Tuesday I will be painting at a big bash at the Cottage in Lake Worth.

Seemingly it is in conjunction with the Breakers on Palm Beach. A DJ from South Beach and MTV will be there and amongst it all will be me painting something red and abstract. At the end of the night the painting will be auctioned off for charity. If you are in the area and you intend on stopping by the Cottage please be sure and wear something red, Red Hot Summer Night is the theme.

On A Roll

Gad zooks, I have been down the last 4 days with a horrible cold/flu. I have been lying here in bed dying to get my hands into some clay. Anyhow, thought I would put up a picture of one of my recent sculptures. Luckily enough I have been selling a lot of my work. The teapot in the previous entry sold. Which is great. The photo that accompanies this entry is a piece that sold in an exhibition at Eaton Fine Art in West Palm Beach. The piece is called Happy Girl. The proceeds for this piece were donated to a scholarship fund. Hopefully enabling a Happy Girl or Boy to afford school tuition.

Lots of new work to come. Laying here for 4 days unable to move, while the brain was dreaming up all sorts of crazy things.

Vixie Chix

After a whole lot of pondering we finally have a product name for my clay figures: Vixie Chix. The people most near and dear refer to me as Vix, Vixter, or Vixie (my mom calls me Vixie). So, combine that with my female figures and voila! Before I did anything else I did an internet search to see if the domain names were available and luckily they were.

If you are not familiar with the process of building a website, you need a domain name. That is you internet address such as VictoriaRoseMartin.com. So I went to GoDaddy.com and checked for availability. Another good rule of thumb when you are buying a domain name, consider buying a variation as well. I bought VixieChix and VixieChicks. That way if someone isn't sure of the spelling if they try either or they still find my site.

The new site is in development. My goal is to design a site that is totally off the wall.(would you expect anything else from me??) My goal is to create a lot of animations and tell stories about the Vixie Chix. Sort of a wacko story book online.

The sculpture that accompanies this entry is called Swim for Shore. It is a tea pot and will be part of the Mad Hatter Tea Pot Show at the Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach. Have a fun day!

New Project Released

My dear friend Margaret Ann Lembo has just released another meditation cd called Think Good Thoughts. My incredibly talented husband Jody Pollard did the all of the studio recording, mixing, and created the background music that accompanies Margaret's spoken word. While I created the artwork and did the graphic design layout for the cd.

As Margaret was writing the script for the cd she said butterfly was dancing past her window which is why the cover features an image of a butterfly.The butterfly is also a metaphor for transformation which is hopefully what will occur after listening to the cd.

The sound is crisp and clear and Margaret's words are inspirational. You can purchase the cd at the Crystal Garden in Boynton Beach and at Whole Foods in South Florida.

Mitchell Hedges Crystal Skull

Last night I attended a function at the Boynton Beach Women's Club where they hosted the Mitchell-Hedges Crystal Skull.If you aren't familiar with the skull it is a clear quartz crystal sculpture the size and shape of a human skull estimated to be as much as 120 centuries old. Known as the Mitchell-Hedges Skull, after the name of its discoverer, it is an object of fantastic sculptural perfection. No other quartz crystal sculpture approaches its quality; even the British Museum’s crystal skull, discovered in Mexico in 1889, is classed as a “rough cut” in comparison.(I got to see the British Museum skull last summer.) This skull was so clear and I was amazed to see the jaw is hinged.

Jody did the sound for the event so I got to slip onto stage and get a picture with the skull. I was sort of afraid to get too close. Can you imagine bumping the table and knocking it over? I could, which is why I am so far away from the table.

The highlight of the night had to be when the man who owns the skull arrived. I was checking people in at the door and he gave me his name, and it wasn't on the list. He said "they called me and asked me to come". I said they called you and your name isn't on the list? Then I noticed he was carrying a big silver box with a huge padlock. Oops! Yes, sir right this way!

New Platter and Centerpiece

Here is a new sculpture titled Serving up Memories. It is made of ceramic and an antique rollerskate. The work was made specifically for the platter show at PBCC.(where I teach)

There are 4 platters and a centerpiece.
The platters are decorated to look like pavement, complete with hopscotch and zebra stripes. It speaks of childhood days spent playing outside until you were called to dinner.

I have to build a few demo pieces for a workshop I will be giving at the Ceramic League of the Palm Beaches at the Craft Gallery. Watch for those images soon!

New Paintings

With the new year comes a new concept. I have started creating a series of paintings based on my sculpture. The image which accompanies this post is titled Kind. It is acrylic on canvas and measures 16"x20".

For the past two days I have gone painting mad! From sun up to sundown... nothing but painting. I bought 5 canvases two days ago and now I need more. A good complaint!

A goal for the new year is to submit work for solo exhibitions. It makes sense to work on a body of 2D and 3D work. I hope you like them.

New Sculpture - What Should I Name Them?

I have started making a new variation of my little bird people.

I have been wracking my brain trying to come up with a name for the new work. They are human and they are bird and they need a name. If you think of a cute name for the creatures, please let me know, and if I like the name I will reward you with a FREE sculpture.

Please excuse my work table, I know it is a mess. As you can see in the photo I have been very busy sculpting and glazing. The new pieces in the photo are not fired, that is why their color is so pale. A kiln is about to be loaded, so fire up your imagination and help me name my creatures.

Creating a New Smaller Line of Figures

I have heard so many of my students and fellow artists say that this is a horrible economy for artists. Rubbish I say!

This is a great time to vary your product line. Have your high end pieces for upscale clientele, but also create a more affordable line for the everyday art collector. I have created a line of small pieces with a smaller price tag just in time for season. Smaller pieces also fit into suitcases, and the Florida economy is based on tourism. (Remember to consider your target audience).

Who doesn't love actually being able buy a piece of art without going bankrupt. Think smaller and make big sales. Like the old saying goes: when you are given lemons, make lemonade.

Ceramics Monthly Article

More good news. First, if you visit the Florida Craftsmen Gallery website you will see I am currently the featured artist. It seems as the gallery was unpacking my newest shipment of work, the piece which accompanies this entry Palms Read sold. She didn't even make it to the shelf!

I have also had three people say "congratulations on the write up in Ceramics Monthly Magazine". I have yet to get my hands on a copy, but Barnes & Nobles assures me they are receiving the October issue this week and I can't wait to see it.

As a result of the article, I have been asked to participate in a few shows. I truly believe when you follow your dreams, (such as making art and teaching again for me) the universe brings to you all you desire.

New Line of Work

I have spent the evening bubble wrapping a new line of sculpture which will be sent to Florida Craftsmen Gallery tomorrow. As you may remember, the last body of work totally sold out during the summer. This piece is called comfort. It is made of clay and was fired multiple times with oxides, glazes, underglazes and slips. There are two drawers in the box portion: his and hers. I like the message written on the larger bird/persons chest. It says "Love is the greatest protection".

And you may notice an improvement of photographic quality from my earlier sculpture. I got a photo tent for my birthday and I absolutely love it. If you are an artist or want to sell things on e-bay, check them out. For these shots I just sat the tent out in bright sunlight and that was it.

Exhibition at Present Global Gallery

It has been a whir since we arrived home from our summer vacation. Just so we didn't forget we were in Florida, good old mother nature threw Tropical Storm Fay at us just as soon as we got home. The latest satellite images of the Atlantic look like a conga line of hurricanes. Hey, but at least we are warm.

I have been sculpting like a maniac since we arrived home. I have a show this Saturday night at Present Global Gallery in West Palm Beach. If you are in the area stop by an accept my invitation to oggle and ohh and ahh my artwork. End of One Journey- Begin Another

The bags are packed and one part of the journey ends. Today we head to a hotel near the airport in an effort to make tomorrow that bit easier.

This morning I finished reading a book Flash CS3 Professional and will hope to finish reading my second book on animation while on the plane. Which brings me to the next journey: Associate Professor with PBCC. I look forward to the semester and incorporating what I experienced this summer into the classroom. From the British Museum, to the Tate Modern, the hip graphics found in Temple Bar or the experience of painting pop art images it all about enjoying life and learning just a little bit more than you knew yesterday.

Glastonbury Rocks!

These photos were taken at the Glastonbury Tor in southwest England. There are many myths and legends associated with the Tor – some say it is the home of the King of the Fairies and is Avalon: the spot where King Arthur and Guinevere were buried.

The day we visited the Tor was shrouded in a misty fog. At times the peak was hidden by clouds from the windswept plains. It was a breathtaking sight and I understand fully why it is known as a magical mountain.

The view was worth every panting breath.

Crop Circle

Yesterday we drove all around the English countryside. On our travels we spotted a crop circle. It was so funny to see it. I mean how many shows or pictures have you seen of them and to see one just sitting right outside your window.

I didn't go into the center of the circle because it was in a farmers field and I couldn't didn't want to trespass. (I am just that kind of girl). But still it was very cool to see. Hope you like it.

Poster for New Room

Jody and I finished painting the bar last night and we headed up upstairs to listen to some music, enjoy some libations, and unwind. However, we were stopped in our tracks when I looked up and saw one of my murals staring back at me.

This is a poster the Venue has put up to announce the opening of the new bar we have just painted. Great job Eddie. I wish we could be here for the opening, but I am sure I can browse the Venue's website and enjoy it from afar.

Seeing the poster really gives one a sense of ahhhh, I can now exhale. A job well done.

Mission Accomplished!

The painting at the Venue is basically done. We went last night and worked on the back of the room. We may go on Monday to give it a once over just to be sure it looks polished.

I added one more mural last night, Bond. James Bond. I found the poster for From Russia with Love and used that and took the liberty of adding a bullseye behind 007 and some smoke coming from his gun. (I think he always had some gun in his pants smoking, didn't he?)

More good news. I went to a gallery in the East End yesterday and inquired about representation. I brought two little sculptures with me and showed them to the gallery director. She said the work was and I quote “exceptional”. She loved the concept and said she would LOVE to show my work. I have to get a packet together with CV and images and she said perhaps in the new year I could have my work included in a show. I will keep you all posted on the outcome.

Great News- Gallery Sells Out!

I have great news to share, my gallery in St. Petersburg, Florida Craftsmen has asked to send more work as they have sold out!

The work was only delivered just over a month ago and this is seemingly the slow season. Needless to say I am thrilled and very happy that I made several pieces before we left on vacation. Now it will be a matter of packing artwork and shipping it once we get home. The photo which accompanies this post is a piece called "Feather Your Nest with Love".

Raquel Mural

Just wanted to add another image before I sign off. This mural is featured at the end of a long corridor which leads into the bar. It is an iconic image from the 1960's (Raquel Welch in her fur bikini). Poor gal, must have been tough being so out of shape and homely. (Yeah Right!!) A gorgeous pose. This mural measures approximately 8 feet high.

I created this artwork specifically for Eddie. I hope you enjoy it for a long time.

Let's just hope the corridor doesn't get log jammed with panting men. Actually, yes we want that... if the men are hot they buy more drinks meaning more business for the bar. Perfect.

Another day, another mural. Actually today we painted more than one thing but who's counting (besides me). Todays images are of the Barbarella mural and the column located in the center of the bar. The Barbarella mural features Jane Fonda and the Angel. It is approximately 10 feet high and spans probably 8 feet across.

The colors used in the room are very warm and inviting. I am sure int he dead of winter it will be a favorite of those craving a little more warmth. As I was painting the vibrant Florida colors reminded me of home.

Painting the Venue, New Cross

We’ve started painting the new bar at the Venue on Friday and Saturday. Both days were at least 12 hours spent with a paintbrush in hand. Having earned a day of rest we made the decision to take today off. But back to work tomorrow.

I have included couple of images of what I am doing in the Venue with this entry. The theme of the room is the 1960’s. With that in mind the images are of Twiggy and Jane Fonda (from Barbarella). The image of Jane Fonda is cool because if you stand in just the right place the orange face lines up exactly with the blue face in the background.

The room sort of has a retro feel with a modern twist. Let me know what you think. I start working on the ceiling tomorrow. Will keep you posted on the state of the room (and my neck).

Magically Delicious

I am putting this photo up because I love the rainbow and what better place for rainbows than Ireland. This photo was taken at Rosslare Strand, County Wexford. It is beyond Happy Days I tell you.
We fly back to London on Wednesday and begin painting in the Venue. When I have artwork to show I will upload the images. For now, enjoy life and chase rainbows. (it's magically delicious)

Howth Head

We are winding down the time being spent here in Ireland. It is amazing how fast the time passes. While preparing for the trip I remember thinking how will I spend my time? What if there is nothing to do, where will we go? And then you turn around and it is a month later and where did the time go?

The photo which accompanies this entry was taken at Howth Head. For those of you who don't know, the city of Dublin is basically located on a bay. Situated at top of the bay is Howth and the bottom of it is Dun Laoghaire. Another perfect day as we watched the Irish ferries cutting through the water returning to port.

Life is good. For those of you who don't remember how good it is try to take the time and do something for yourself. Otherwise you may turn around and find that while you weren't looking life has passed you by.

Jody and Benny Jammming

Jody played yet another gig in Dublin at Doolin’s on Holles Street. Last night he was joined on stage by long time pal and band mate Benny White. Jody and Benny first performed together during the 70’s in bands such as Elmer Fudd and Portrait. Jody wants you all to know that “it was a pleasure for Benny to be on stage with him again”. You can see from the photo that accompanies this entry that both Jody and Benny have since(the 1970's)gotten their hair trimmed by a considerable amount.

Tonight we enjoy a night off and a couple of pints. We are plotting our next week here. I have created designs for a bar in London. So we are most likely heading back over there next week so I can create some murals. Will keep you updated.

Back in Dublin

We arrived back in Dublin today after zooming around the countryside. It is true every where you turn here there is a castle. One of my favorites so far was Johnstown Castle in County Wexford. While we were there the bridal parties and photographers were lined up. The grounds and gardens are absolutely stunning. The sound of peacocks and trickling waterfalls filled the air.

We also made a point of seeing Kells Priory. The ruins were breathtaking. The priory is situated alongside King's River beside the village of Kells, about 15km south of the city of Kilkenny. The priory is a National Monument. One of its most striking features is a collection of medieval tower houses spaced at intervals along and within walls which enclose a site of just over three acres. These give the priory the appearance more of a fortress than of a place of worship and from them comes its local name of "Seven Castles".

After we toured the grounds we headed back to Rosslare for a walk on the beach. The photograph was taken at sunset, which over here in the summer is about 9:00 PM.

Jody's Weekend Gigs

Jody is playing two gigs this weekend in Dublin. Tonight at the Concord in Edenmore, Raheny at 10:30 PM. Tomorrow night you can find him at Waterside, Clondalkin at 10:30 PM. So, if you know anyone in Dublin tell them to come out and support Jody.

Donadea National Forest

We had another lovely day. We went to the Museum of Modern Art in Dublin. While most of the artwork was good there were a few pieces I found to be a bit contrived.
But hey who am I to judge. It rained again today (there seems to be a pattern developing) so it was nice strolling leisurely through the museum. Afterwards we drove through the Phoenix Park. Which by the way is the largest urban enclosed park in Europe. It is amazing to see herds of reindeer grazing away in a park in the center of Dublin.

Dublin, Ireland Just a WEE Bit Cooler...

We are in Dublin, Ireland and from the moment we stepped off the plane there was just something in the air... I call it ICE!! Seriously, the temperature in Ireland is much cooler than what we had in London. I have been wearing a heavy wool jacket, sweater, two shirts and a scarf. Yep, summer in Ireland where you can experience 4 seasons in one day. So happy I brought that little bikini. I could use the top as ear muffs.

All kidding aside, it is so lovely here. And boys and girls we must remember, it is the rain which gives the Emerald Isle her lovely green grass, happy flower boxes, and ENORMOUS CROWS.

Jody and I got a wonderful tour of the Book of Kells yesterday from his friend Benny. (thanks Benny!) Tonight we are heading out to Brady's Pub (yes Denise, just like Days) for a pint tonight.

London Was Lovely

We spent the past week in London, England. The weather was absolutely sensational with sunny weather and temps in the low 80's, light sweaters needed at night. Jody and I walked the city from one end to the other. It doesn't get dark until 11 PM so we had plenty of time to plod around time. One day our pedometers recorded 11 miles.

From the Camden Town Market to the British Museum and of course Big Ben we had a really great time.

If you haven't been to London it really is a great city. It is a true melting pot of different cultures, sights and sounds.

Getting ready to catch a plane and wanted to say thanks to our wonderful friends for the great send off. Honestly, what a great group of people.

Painted Dome

I did a little side job today and painted ceiling dome in a masterbath. The client requested blue sky and birds. I kept the painting a bit understated as the room has wall paper and marble with strong patterns. The room felt very traditional so I didn't want to create anything too over the top.

The birds are sort of a blue bird hybrid. I painted the birds on mulberry paper and chine colled them to the ceiling. I did that to cut down on time spent "on site". Which is always nice for both artist and client. Also nice for the client, I finished the mural so quickly I felt obligated to reduce the price.

Here is an image from my new body of artwork which was delivered to Florida Craftsmen Gallery in St. Petersburg, Florida. It is a gorgeous space located in the historic downtown district. If you find yourself in St. Pete, please go to the gallery and take a look around. Don't be bashful, visit an art gallery. The most amazing part about Florida Craftsmen is that the price point in the gallery fits most everyone's pocket. I found pieces for under $20 all the way up to several thousands of dollars.

This piece titled "Feather Your Nest" is made out of fired ceramic clay, it is glazed with slips, underglazes, and oxides and measures 7 inches high. This piece is a decorative box, please notice the small square shape on the front is a drawer. Just the right size for jewelry or other small treasures. I will update the rest of my new work on my website as soon as I am able.

Hello and I am sad to report to those of you who don't know, but my father died on May 5th. As a result blogging sort of went down to the bottom of my list of things to do. Only now almost a month later do I feel like I am finally coming out of the fog.

I thought I would pay a small tribute to my father by posting a couple of images of him back when he was strong and able bodied. These are pictures of the father I want to remember. The man who used to bring me home a dill pickle in his lunch box. The man who could grow anything in his garden and taught me to respect nature and all of her creatures. Daddy O, Til We Meet Again, I love you.

My Father- On an Indian

This photo is my father, taken when we was 16 years old in Canandaigua, New York. Dad is going in for surgery this week and I thought I would share this image of him in hopes as you look at it, you will send him loving, healing energy. Besides, it is a happy photo and I personally think he was a cute little bugger.

Usually when men see this photo they ask "what kind of bike is that". To the best of my knowledge, it is an Indian. He used to race them when he was young (an Indian riding and Indian). Perfect.

Something for Me

Still super busy and creating so much work for everyone else, the other night I just had to sit down and paint something for me. Sometimes you just have to do stuff for yourself. I am not sure of the title yet but I am calling it Manifestation for now (acrylic on canvas: 24" x 36").
Something really cool happened as I painted. I was holding a lamp over the canvas and all of the sudden I started seeing colors emerging. They were like colored halos around the edges of the angel. (cool coincidence seeing halos around an angel).
There was bright emerald green extending from her fingers, blue and reds framed her face. As I worked the colors kept appearing in the same places. So I told myself if I am seeing these colors why not paint them?

Palm Tree Mural

The palm tree painting went very well. As the result of painting so much for the past 6 weeks at Slainte, my hand just flew across the wall and the trees were completed in approximately 40 minutes. I lowered the price a bit because it was done so fast.

Today, I want to relax and read a book. Yesterday I paid a visit to my dear girlfriend Margaret's shop The Crystal Garden. While visiting she gave me a book to read; A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle. If you are in Boynton Beach perhaps before you go to admire the gorgeous Slainte pub (wink wink), stop by Margaret's shop the and browse around. It is quite lovely. They provide complimentary tea and the store is chock full of incense and oils and I do buy a lot of my funky jewelry there.

I am a firm believer in supporting small local businesses and artists. Especially in these times where the economy is less than glowing, they need us.
